Psychedelic Medicine and Cultural Trauma workshop

Our whole therapy team (Michelle Joy, Aisha Mohammed, Jennifer Jones, Bob Sher, and Hannah McLane) plus our community organizer (Ayele Ajavon) are heading to Kentucky next week (Aug 10-11) for a Psychedelic Medicine and Cultural Trauma workshop. The speaker lineup and topics are incredible. It is open to the public and we would love to have a West Philly contingent there!

If you can’t make it but are super interested, Ayele will be holding a meeting to teach others what she learned at the workshop and then we will plan outreach activities aimed specifically at engaging POC and other marginalized communities.

“Trauma experienced by people of color is historical, cultural, systemic, and communal, in addition to an increased likelihood of experiencing discrete interpersonal trauma. To understand individual therapy, it is imperative that therapists, as well as community leaders, understand the larger traumatic context. This day-and-a-half opening workshop focuses on the political and social factors that impact trauma and healing.

Community leaders will join trainees for this workshop to engage in dialogue about the social, political, cultural, and historical causes of trauma, as well as to discuss barriers to acceptance of MDMA-assisted psychotherapy in communities of color while envisioning ways forward.” — maps.org

Here is an excellent podcast that discusses this topic as well (Monnica T. Williams, who is featured in this podcast episode, will be one of the speakers in Kentucky). You can also read an excellent piece about race-based trauma and MDMA-assisted psychotherapy by Dr. Williams in the article linked below:
